 7:00 am, 8:30 am (spanish) 10:30, 12:30 (spanish), 5:30 | 14 Chrism Mass at St. Augustine Cathedral
The Mass of Chrism comes once a year to your cathedral. If you've never celebrated it, you're missing one of the most solemn and significant liturgies of our church. During the Mass, your bishop will bless the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick, and the oil of chrism. We use the first for adult catechumens and infants, the second for anointing the sick, and the sacred oil of chrism for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests, and the consecration of altars. All three are basically an olive oil; chrism spices the air with the scent of a perfume, traditionally balsam. For pastoral reasons, another vegetable oil and perfume may be used. Bishops have blessed oil ever since the early church. They baptized catechumens at the Easter Vigil and prepared chrism fresh for the occasion. While they were blessing chrism, they blessed the other oils as well. Rather than overburdening the Vigil with this ritual, bishops blessed these oils at the previous celebration of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday. This also allowed time to transport vessels of oil from the cathedral to all the churches in the diocese. For more than one thousand years, bishops blessed the oils at the cathedral Holy Thursday liturgy, but in 1955 we added a separate Mass earlier in the day at the cathedral for that purpose, the Mass of Chrism. Today it may be celebrated on a different day shortly before Holy Thursday to give the celebration independence and so that more people like you may attend. Since the bishop is the only minister in the diocese who may consecrate chrism, this Mass highlights his ministry and our union with him. He will not baptize and confirm everyone in the parishes of the diocese, but he will be symbolically present in the chrism which the priests and deacons will use. In recent years, this Mass has also acknowledged the ministry of priests. It invites them to renew their commitment of service and to receive the prayers and support of the people. The Mass of Chrism gathers the faithful of the diocese at their mother church with their shepherd to prepare for celebrations of Christ in all our churches throughout the year. 7PM Veneration of the Holy Cross
Friday Apr 18, 2014 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
"To venerate" derives from the Latin verb, venerare, meaning to regard with reverence and respect. Because the Cross is inseparable from His sacrifice, in reverencing His Cross we, in effect, adore Christ. Thus we affirm: 'We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee because by Thy Holy Cross Thou has Redeemed the World. In fact, in the United States, the new General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) stipulates that the cross used at Holy Mass must have the figure of Christ. The following is the reason we venerate the Cross.
Our Father through Jesus Christ & the Holy Spirit transformed death into life. Because Christ was sinless, the penalty of sin (which is death) was not upon Him. Therefore, His crucifixion on the Cross was a completely self-less and sacrificial act. Further, because He was sinless, He could also be raised from the dead. As we know, the Holy Spirit raised Christ from dead after three days. The sting of death and the victory of hell are now destroyed.
The following are verses of the Katavasias (hymns). "Pilate set up three crosses in the place of the Skull, two for the thieves and one for the Giver of Life. Seeing Him, hell cried to those below: 'O my ministers and powers! Who is this that has fixed a nail in my heart? A wooden spear has pierced me suddenly, and I am torn apart. Inwardly I suffer; anguish has seized my belly and my senses. My spirit trembles, and I am constrained to cast out Adam and his posterity. A tree brought them to my realm, but now the Tree of the Cross brings them back again to Paradise."
In Christ, God's love is directed towards the reconciliation of His fallen creation with Himself. In this way, the Cross becomes the Tree of Life, the source through which God's light and life is encountered and experienced in the fallen world. This is one reason why we venerate the Holy Cross. Amen.
Fr. Richard Demetrius Andrews is the pastor of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Veneration of an image or representation of Christ's cross does not mean that we actually adore the material image but rather what it represents. In kneeling before the crucifix and kissing it we are paying the highest honor to our Lord's cross as the instrument of our salvation.
Prayer of St. Benedict
May the Sacred Cross be my light - Let not the devil be my guide. Begone satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! Evil is the cup you offer. Drink the poison yourself. AMEN!
